Third Party Training Storyline Course
Assignments & Tracking
The business needed a way to assign third party training - whether a webinar, recording, or other format - to employees to track completion internally within our Learning Management System.
The requirements were:
- Provide employees with all necessary training information
- Consolidate everything into a single course to minimize assignments and tracking
- Make the experience engaging enough to motivate employees to complete the assignment
This project became an exercise in balancing stakeholder requirements with user experience, supported by a substantial amount of technical troubleshooting.

Honesty is the best policy
Although registration and completion of the training operated on an honor system, I implemented controls that ensured employees received the required information while still encouraging active participation. These included:
- Locking down the course so users were required to view every slide before completion
- Requiring users to navigate to the training registration page before advancing through the course
- Adding registration and completion attestations with mandatory submissions to reinforce accountability
Thank you, and Welcome Back
Because the project required a single course to handle both registration and completion tracking, I designed a specific user experience: the course would close on a “thank you, goodbye” screen, and upon resuming, reopen on a “welcome back” screen.
Achieving this was particularly challenging due to how Storyline communicates with the LMS and manages saved states. However, by using variables, multi‑states, hidden layers, and two days of troubleshooting, I was able to make it work.
