TAPVI, the Texas Association of Parents of Children with Visual Impairments, is a state-wide nonprofit organization run by volunteer parents of children with visual impairments. TAPVI's mission is to educate parents and caregivers on the needs of their children and to help them find resources to meet those needs. TAPVI's organization includes a complex structure and affiliate network with local chapters in cities across Texas.
Community members of TAPVI struggled to understand the organization structure and relationships between affiliates and chapters, and needed a solution to explain how the overarching organization functioned to support families in need.
I conducted a design brief with TAPVI's Board of Directors to understand the issues. Then, I workshopped the chart with the Board, and refined content and visuals with the Executive Board. The process inspired dialogue that helped the Board better define roles and relationships within the organization.
I created a digestible infographic that explains the hierarchy and specific functions of each of the parts of the organization, and shows the relationships of the members and the Board of Directors. With this new tool, the Board members were able to bring clarity and increase engagement with families, and encourage members to volunteer for positions with responsibilities to help TAPVI continue their mission.
